I'm busy getting work ready for Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair at Grenada Studios in Manchester: steaming new mirror frames, sanding and painting finished pieces...
Its going to be a great show, beautifully curated with craft and design from the North of England. A while ago I sent a proposal for a sculpture as a submission for The Open West 2015. Little did I think that my piece (then existing only as an idea in my head and a quick sketch on paper) would get chosen. Three months down the line, many long evenings and lots of copper boat building rivets later, the piece is complete and has travelled all the way from the South Lake District to Cheltenham. If you get the chance, do go and take a look! This is an annual open submission exhibition with work from national and international artists practising contemporary and conceptual art. Work submitted include painting, installation, film and sound, textile, photography, ceramics, drawing, print, performance and sculpture.

Just written a blog post for the Hothouse 5 blog about our first sessions. Here's the link if you fancy reading about what the makers on the Hothouse programme this year have learnt so far. http://www.craftscouncil.org.uk/articles/hothouse-blog/ Here's a photo of the wonderful Northern Cohort after our first Hothouse session in Stockport. Ceramicists, textile designers, furniture makers, jewellers and surface designers all looking quite chilly and ready for lunch.
Thanks to the lovely Jessie for making me the 'Skilled Person of the Week' on Pandora's Toolbox. If you haven't heard of this gem of a website yet, go and take a look! On the site you can share your skills with and learn skills from other people. Its a great idea, I'm hoping an accordion player will sign up so I can learn to play... In return I can offer steam bending knowledge, or German conversation skills! It is still in its early stages, so I'm excited to see how people will swap their skills!
http://www.pandorastoolbox.org/ I've just seen that images of a bridge project I was involved in are up on Design Boom alongside a great little video. As a part of Dartmoor Arts a team of students made a boardwalk to cross a stream and to enable the user to linger and have a more focused experience of the landscape. A great week with some wonderful people! The process of creating a structure in a team was very interesting - we shared ideas and the project was driven forward by everybody's energy and contributions.

I'm very excited to be taking part in the Craft Council's Hothouse programme. 39 makers from across Britain were selected. I look forward to seeing some familiar faces from Contemporary Crafts at Falmouth University (Leah Jensen http://leahjensen.co.uk/ and Bethany Robinson https://bethrobinsoncraft.wordpress.com/) as well as meeting many new people and learning about their creative work.
Take a look at the Hothouse Pnterest for images of all selected makers: http://www.pinterest.com/CraftsCouncilUK/crafts-council-hothouse-5/ Some information about the programme from the Crafts Council: " The 39 makers selected already display a high level of technical craftsmanship and originality but the programme, which starts in February 2015, will equip them with the business and creative skills needed to run a successful and sustainable craft practice. " http://www.craftscouncil.org.uk/articles/crafts-council-announces-makers-selected-for-hothouse I am pleased that my work will be exhibited alongside other recent graduates in 'Class of 2014' at the National Centre for Craft and Design in Sleaford, Lincolnshire from 11th October to 30th November 2014 in the Rooftop Gallery.
